Exploring the globe one sip at a time
Bhutan
From Red Rice to Red Panda
Bhutan has a growing beer culture, with several locally brewed products that have gained popularity both within the country and among visitors. The most prominent beer brand is Red Rice Lager, produced by Bhutan Brewery. Made from Bhutanese red rice, this lager has a distinct flavor that reflects the local terroir and has become a favorite among both locals and tourists.
Another popular beer is Druk 11000, a strong lager widely consumed across the country. Known for its high alcohol content and robust flavor, Druk 11000 has established itself as a staple in Bhutan’s beer offerings.
Red Panda is another well-known beer, celebrated as Bhutan’s first craft beer. This unfiltered wheat beer, brewed in Bumthang by Namgay Artisanal Brewery, is crafted using traditional methods with a focus on local ingredients. Its cloudy appearance and rich, smooth flavor, with subtle hints of fruit and spice, make it a refreshing choice, especially popular among those visiting the Bumthang Valley.
The rise of craft beer in Bhutan is also noteworthy, with small breweries like Serbhum Brewery producing unique craft beers that appeal to a niche market. These craft beers are often enjoyed by tourists as part of their cultural experience in Bhutan.
Other notable beers include:
Druk Lager: A lighter, sessionable beer with a crisp and clean taste, widely available throughout the country.
Druk Supreme: A premium lager with a slightly stronger and richer flavor than Druk Lager, offering a smooth, well-balanced drinking experience.
Thunder 15000: A strong beer from the Army Welfare Project, known for its higher alcohol content and bold taste.
Beer in Bhutan is not just a beverage, but also part of the social fabric, enjoyed during festivals, celebrations and casual gatherings. These diverse beer products reflect the richness of Bhutan’s beer culture, ranging from traditional lagers to artisanal craft beers, each offering a unique taste of the country.
Namibia
The Story of an Iconic Beerhouse
It all started as a discovery of a new world – German-born Joachim Gross, or Joe as he was known amongst friends, was a master chef who’d worked and travelled around the world.
In 1986 he arrived in Namibia and upon his arrival, this nomad finally felt at home. A passion for travel, stories and food fused together when Joe’s Beerhouse opened its doors in October 1991.
Joe’s started as a quaint little beer garden, but soon, due to its popularity and maybe also because Joe ran out of space to put all his treasures from the road, the restaurant moved to its current location at 160 Nelson Mandela Avenue in Windhoek.

South Africa
Crafting Legends & Trendy Taps
Newlands Brewery
Newlands Brewery, dating back to 1820 is the oldest operating brewery in South Africa and the home of great South African Beer. Today, the company brews 9 famous brands, each one specially crafted using time-honoured brewing techniques. Brewery tours are available and take about an hour. Newlands Spring Brewing Co. follows the journey of beer from its beginning as a grain, to its end as a well-crafted, ice-cold treasure, fittingly ending with a beer tasting and a couple of pints in the brewery’s historic pub.
Woodstock Brewery
The company has been brewing beer since 2014 and has a wide variety on offer. Woodstock believes that great beer requires seriousness: the best ingredients, dedicated arty crafters, the right equipment and “gees” and “stokedness”. Beer names, on the other hand, are all “giggles, sex, drugs and rock ‘n roll”. They have entwined some tongue-in-cheek lightness into their serious craft. We invite you to come and take a tour, sample their brews and follow that experience by enjoying a Bavarian Beerhall style restaurant.
Aegir Project (Independent Brewery)
Aegir Project in Noordhoek (Southern Peninsula) is relatively new and trendy. The brewery was founded with one simple goal: to make real beer, properly. That means, using only the best quality hops, malts, yeasts and water. No additives, no preservatives, no shortcuts – ever. Aegir Project is pouring time, care and love into every detail of production: from how they brew, to the artwork they put on the packaging, to the feeling you get when you take that first sip of an Aegir Project pint. High-quality, authentic beer that’s both innovative and approachable. 11 beers are being served on tap.
